Arts & crafts are more than a pasttime in Mercury Bay. With many talented artisans, you are sure to find that unique gift you were looking for from the best New Zealand carvers, knitters and potters.
The Bone Studio offers a unique collection of original artwork from many of New Zealand's finest carvers. With media ranging from bone (whale and beef) to pounamu (jade) to wood, punga (tree fern) and hypertufa (a combination of cement and peat). This gallery resembles a museum with displays of Maori carving and artifacts and is well worth a visit!
Cloverdale Knitwear is the creation of a talented knitter and wool dyer. With many original designs, Wendy's waistcoats, jerseys and felted hats are a wonderful addition to any wardrobe.
Rhodes Pottery is midway between Whitianga and Hot Water Beach — where you see the "potter in the paddock." Alan and Julia's creations make wonderful additions to any collection of functional pottery — and they offer a "potter's homestay" where budding potters can hone their skills on the wheel and at the kiln.
The Craft Trail page identifies a number of other area artisans.
