The Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve, encompassing Cathedral Cove, is one of the precious resources of Mercury Bay. A sea-land reserve, it offers unparalleled swimming, diving/snorkeling, kayaking and trekking.
The Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve was established in 1992 in recognition of the rich and varied habitats found
within its boundaries and to help restore this unique marine environment. The vision is of a well managed reserve, bountiful in marine life, respected and enjoyed by the public for generations to come.
The Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve covers 9 square kilometres on the Pacific (east) coast of the Coromandel Peninsula and is administered by the Department of Conservation in partnership with the Te Whanganui-A-Hei Marine Reserve Committee.
