Alan and Julia Rhodes make distinctive New Zealand pottery, fired in gas and salt kilns, and a wood-fired pit kiln.
They established their rural pottery on the Coromandel Peninsula in 1977 and were fortunate to discover on their property a beautiful stoneware clay that they fire up to 1300ºC. They produce lovely handthrown pots with magnificent glazes that are unique to the Coromandel. All their dishes, sink basins and fish are handmade in their studio and are ovenproof, microwave and dishwasher safe. There has been a lot of interest recently in the handthrown sink basins, which are available in the full range of colours.

In 2003, Alan won the top prize in the pottery section of the Thames Arts Society Exhibition. Visitors to the studio can watch work in progress and are able to purchase direct from the potters a special memento of their holiday on the Coromandel.

Alan drifted into potting after 5 years with the Hamilton County Bluegrass Band and is now still playing music with Julia in the Irish band 'The DescendNz'.
